Apple is preparing changes that would let drivers use third-party AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, in CarPlay, while still keeping Siri as the system’s default voice trigger and button controls, reports say.
CarPlay access expands beyond Siri
Apple is working on an update that would allow voice-controlled AI apps from other companies to run in CarPlay, a shift from the current approach where CarPlay voice interactions largely route through Siri. Bloomberg reported that the plan would let users query external AI chatbots through the car’s interface for the first time, though the feature has not been publicly announced by Apple.
TechCrunch also reported that Apple is developing CarPlay support for AI chatbots like ChatGPT, denoting a broader push to modernize how users interact with in-car software.
Siri remains the built-in control layer
Even with third-party chatbot access, Siri is not expected to be replaced inside CarPlay. The Verge noted that Apple would not allow users to swap out the Siri wake word or the built-in Siri button; instead, drivers would need to manually open the chatbot app within CarPlay to use it. The same report said developers can configure their apps to automatically enter voice mode when opened, reducing friction for hands-free use.
MacRumors similarly reported that third-party chatbot apps would be accessible for hands-free queries, but they won’t be activated via a wake word and won’t replace Siri. Users would need to launch the app in CarPlay to interact with the chatbot, and the apps would not be able to control vehicle or iPhone functions.
What could this change in the car
If Apple rolls out the capability, it could broaden what drivers can do with voice in CarPlay—especially for more open-ended questions and conversational requests that users increasingly associate with AI chatbots. At the same time, keeping Siri’s wake word and button in place suggests Apple is striving to preserve a consistent safety and control model while still allowing access to external AI services.
Timeline remains unofficial
Apple has not confirmed a release date. Bloomberg said the company is working to support these apps in CarPlay within the coming months, but details could change because the plan has not been formally announced.
